Advent Week 1 | Hope

Week 1 | Hope

Scripture: Isaiah 9:2–7

The people walking in darkness have seen a great light;

on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.

You have enlarged the nation and increased their joy;

they rejoice before you as people rejoice at the harvest,

as warriors rejoice when dividing the plunder.

For as in the day of Midian’s defeat, you have shattered

the yoke that burdens them, the bar across their shoulders,

the rod of their oppressor.

Every warrior’s boot used in battle and every garment rolled in blood

will be destined for burning, will be fuel for the fire.

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given,

and the government will be on his shoulders.

And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,

Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end.

He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom,

establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever.

The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.

Devotional:

Advent reminds us that God always keeps His promises, even when it feels like nothing is happening. Israel waited centuries for the Messiah. They walked through dark seasons of fear and uncertainty, yet God had already promised a great Light was coming. That promise was fulfilled when Jesus entered the world. He was hope wrapped in human skin.

Hope isn’t just wishing for things to get better. True hope is rooted in who God is. It is rooted in His faithfulness, His power, and His goodness. When we say Jesus is our hope, we are declaring that light is greater than darkness, that God’s future has the final word, and that even when life feels uncertain, Jesus is already working for our good and His glory.

During this season of Advent, Gateway is stepping forward in faith and trusting God to move in powerful ways. We believe Jesus has placed us here to shine His light into our community. As we wait on God, we wait with hope.

Whatever your family is walking through, Advent declares that Light has come, and He is with you.

Discussion Question:

Where do you need the hope of Jesus to shine in your life this week?

Family Activity:

Light one candle and sit quietly as a family. Watch the flame and thank Jesus that His light always breaks through darkness.

Prayer Focus:

Pray together about the specific areas where you need Jesus to fill your home and your hearts with His hope this week.
